Jeanne kept me company during Lockdown. While I was pacing up and down on our small beach, gazing out at the wide ocean, I was being transported by Glynis Ridley's biography of Jeanne Baré's odyssey. In the mid-1700s, Jeanne, a young peasant, orphan and self-taught herbalist, through a chance encounter with a botanist, became the first woman to circumnavigate the world, a feat she accomplished by disguising her sex. My collection is written in her voice. I am grateful to the Arts Council for an Agility Award to write this collection. I'm also delighted to say it's been nominated for the Forward Prize for Best Collection.
